Overview

Etching is a critical process used to reveal the microstructure of metallographic specimens. Common etching techniques include chemical, electrolytic, thermal, plasma, molten salt, and magnetic methods.

3% Nital Etchant, 3% Nitric acid in denatured alcohol. Similar to 2% Nital but more aggressive. Better for harder steels and bainitic structures.
