Epoxy Castable Mounting

The most common and best-performing castable resins are epoxy-based. These are two-part liquid systems consisting of a resin and hardener. Mixing ratios vary by mount size, larger mounts require less hardener. Advantages of mounting with epoxy resins include: low shrinkage, relatively clear, relatively low exotherm, excellent adhesion, excellent chemical resistance, good hardness, relatively inexpensive.

Epoxy Curing Characteristics

Curing times depend on several factors, including the volume of mounting resin, as larger mounts cure faster, and the specimen's thermal mass, since specimens with higher thermal mass absorb more heat and cure more slowly. Specimen material properties also influence curing behavior. Higher initial resin and ambient temperatures accelerate curing, while high humidity and moisture absorption can degrade the resin and shorten its shelf life. The type of mounting mold used also affects heat absorption, as plastic and rubber molds behave differently during curing
