Maritime Security (MARSEC) identification signs are designed in bold for quick viewing from a distance. The three level codes designate which security measures are in effect. When Homeland Security issues a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Alert, the U.S. Coast Guard adjusts the MARSEC level as appropriate to the threat.
