Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between lockout and tagout?
Lockout uses a device and padlock to physically isolate energy. Tagout uses lockout tags as a warning only. No physical restraint. OSHA favors lockout; tagout is used only when lockout isn't feasible.
What are OSHA requirements for lockout/tagout tags?
Lockout/tagout tags must be durable, legible, standardized, and securely attached with a non-reusable fastener. They should identify the authorized employee, warn against operation, and withstand the work environment.
What color and wording should a lockout tag have?
Most lock out tags use high-visibility red/white or yellow/black. Wording is clear and direct – typically "DANGER – DO NOT OPERATE" – plus name, department, and contact info. Follow your site's standard so tags stay consistent.
